Skills

The Skills tab enables you to specify the types of special skills that employees possess and the charge rates per hour for the performance of the skill. You can specify any number of skill types for an employee. Skill types are defined on the Data -> Shop Activity -> Setup -> Employees -> Setup -> Skill Types screen.

Detail View Header

The field in the top section of this tab defines the data that displays.

Employee ID

Unique identifier of the employee currently selected in the grid or that you are defining. This field has a list box. If the ID already exists, the employee name displays to the right of the ID.

Detail View

Data in the fields at the bottom section of this tab specify the employee's skills and rates. All fields are optional.

Delete

To delete the entries in the fields to the right, place a check in this field and click Save.

Skill type

Special skill or training that the employee possesses. This field has a list box. This is used by labor rates, especially when calculating any overage charges for specific skills used during labor. For more information, refer to Determining Labor Rates.

Charge rate per hour

This field allows the user to input an hourly rate the shop charges (also known as a surcharge) for tasks that require the employee to perform the special skill type. See Determining Labor Rates for more information on Labor Rates and the calculations that determine them.

Primary

If this field has a check, the skill is considered a primary one. Employees are scheduled based on their primary skills before they are considered for other task requirements. This is useful if your organization has union rules that require that technicians perform the tasks or job functions for which they won the shift bid, but allows them to be scheduled for other tasks if there is no current work that requires their primary skills.

Exclude surcharge from multiplier

Check this option to apply exclusions separately by individually defined skills. The following example shows two different cases of the surcharge whether it is included or excluded from the multiplier.

When calculating the cost of surcharges, the system sums up all surcharges for skills on the Class/Task screen. If the skill type for the employee has Exclude surcharge from multiplier checked, the system adds the surcharge total after the multiplier has been accounted for. If it is unchecked, the surcharge total is added as it was before, before the multiplier. See below for an example of excluding the surcharge and including the surcharge.

Include surcharge from multiplier

This example includes the value in the Charge rate per hour field (surcharge).

Important variables

([10+2]*1.5)*1 = 18

The total amount per hour for this example would be $18/hr.

Exclude surcharge from multiplier

This example excludes the value in the Charge rate per hour field (surcharge).

Important variables

([10*1.5]+2)*1 = 17

The total amount per hour for this example would be $17/hr.

Note:

When completing a reversal and the surcharge value has changed, the amount will not be exactly the same as these are calculated each time.
